Lets Talk: Exercise in a Heatwave

Written on: June 19, 2025

Is it safe to walk my dog during a heatwave?
It depends on different variables for example breed and temperature. Some pups can be fine walking in 19 degree heat whereas other breeds may not be okay at all. It is incredibly important for all dog owners to know when it is too hot.

So, when is too hot?
For most breeds it is safe to walk in 15-18 degrees, however as it reaches 18 degrees some larger breeds may start to struggle. Breeds that are flat faced can also start to have some issues at this heat, flat faced breeds have a smaller more narrow throat, meaning they are unable to pant as effectively. At 21 degrees all sizes of pups can start to have some issues. I do not recommend walking your pups over 22 degrees. It is not worth the risk of heatstroke. There are multiple different activities you can do with your pup to keep them stimulated.

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?
– Tiredness
– Confusion
– Seizures
– Vomiting & diarrhoea
– Discoloured gums
– Drooling/Foaming
– Dry mouth
– Heavy breathing/Panting
– Collapsing or unsteady legs

Always ensure your pets have access to fresh clean drinking water.
